Doug Schneider – The Back Story
Doug Schneider is a commercial, editorial and stock photographer based in Dobbs Ferry, NY. Although he’s best known for his food imagery, he also loves to shoot lifestyle, travel and aerial photos. When not behind the lens, he can be found writing and performing music for his roots-rock band Greetings From Anywhere. We asked Doug to provide the back story for these images from his first submission to Evolve:
“These images are a cross section of what I enjoy shooting with my iPhone camera; nature, lifestyle and photojournalism. Although I always have my professional camera close at hand, I’ve been increasingly enjoying the impromptu nature of my iPhone, especially in conjunction with the array of available photo filter apps.”

“This Japanese maple tree is right outside my office and seems to have a different personality every month. It’s never more brilliant than in October and as I was walking underneath it during a mid-day lunch break I was captivated by not only its marvelous colors but also the pattern of its gnarly branches.”

“Clover is a pit bull rescue and has become a beloved member of our family since we adopted her two years ago. This image was taken on a road trip to one of our favorite hiking spots upstate. It captures Clover’s almost human-like posture as a passenger in our car as she patiently awaits her chance to romp in the woods.”

“The final image depicts evening commuters on a Metro-North train platform to New York City. It captures the bleakness and anonymity of the daily commute in winter.”

Alexey Poselenov: Beauty From The Depths Of Siberia
Shortly after launching Evolve earlier this year, our friend Jon Lund was kind enough to write a nice piece in his blog about our launch. Widely read by both photographers and creatives. our inbox immediately began to fill up with submissions from photographers around the globe who were attracted to our vision and wanted their images to be considered for our curated collection. One of the submissions we received was from Alexey Poselenov a photographer living and working in the remote landscape of Siberia. We were immediately taken with his beautifully composed, lyrical landscapes and asked Alexey to tell us more about his approach:
“I was born in 1969 in city of Kemerovo in Siberia. This is a place deep in Russia with harsh climate, but very beautiful and I love it. Photography always was in my life in a varying degree. But I began to photograph truly only few years ago. At that time I became a military retiree and was able to do what I love much more time. And I was only 34.
I avidly studied photography and I am continuing to do this so far. I can say that I like to photograph everything but nude and glamour. If it is not possibile to shoot for a long time, my mood deteriorates and I get depression. Then I take my camera and go anywhere to find something for photographing.”

“It was beginning of winter. Snow was not too deep, so I could walk in forest without ski, just on foot. It was easy to walk far. Weather was pretty warm and snow was very clammy. Once after night blizzard all trees in close birch forest became covered by snow. The scene of snow covered birches was very graphic. Of course I couldn’t stay at home. I took my camera and went to photograph. The result you can see now.”

“Landscape is most lovely theme to photograph for me. I often walk and drive to find new scenes. On the South of Kemerovo region in Russia there is the place named Salair Ridge. It is a chain of not too high mountains. Once upon a time I went to shoot these hills. One of them you can see on this image. It was dawn of the night. Behind of me there was sunrise which colored the Moon in red. The weather was 30 below zero, but orange colors on the photo make it much warmer.”

“This image was captured in autumn when fogs are very often in the mornings. It’s a good time for those photographers who want to get misty photos. All you have to do is to find appropriate lake or pond, wake up before sunrise and go there.”

“As many photographers do I usually always take my camera with me. Truly the photo you can see here was taken by chance. I was driving in my car through some village and my camera was with me. I saw this landscape and liked it. Then I stopped and did my usual job in such case. So here is no intrigue, just some luck, a quick eye and close camera.
My main aim in photographing is not money, but to do something what can give people good emotions, smile, lovely memories, feelings of our beautiful nature.
And I give many thanks to God that I can do this.”

Robert Llewellyn – The Back Story: Always Be Prepared
Master photographer and author Robert Llewellyn created these images one of which was featured in our May edition of “Curator’s Choice.” It drew a lot of attention from creatives as it had the highest click through among all images used in our monthly “What’s New” communique. We contacted Robert and he graciously shared the back story on this image plus several others now available in our collection.

“We hired a trainer with an attack dog to do a shoot. He was a great attack dog and looked really terrifying. He was actually a very calm dog. The trainer said he could do anything you wanted. So we shot him holding things in his mouth. One was a cell phone. (But he didn’t actually make calls.)”

“We found this huge empty room with windows along one whole wall floor to ceiling. The light was beautiful. We rented the space for a lot of shoots using the natural light. Even brought in furniture and set up a business shoot. I asked if they used the space for anything else. Well, there was a weekly ballet class with little kids. I couldn’t resist.”

“I did a shoot with a friend of mine and his family. My studio is on a 60 acre farm so we did the shoot there. Some of the best photos are not planned. The father was just giving his son a ride down my driveway. Could not have asked for better light. Always be prepared for things you do not expect.”

Stuart Westmorland: In Focus
I’ve been a fan of Stuart Westmorland‘s work since we met more than 10 years ago. While noted for his breathtaking underwater images, Stuart’s portfolio offers great depth (pun intended) and we are delighted to make those images available on Evolve. We asked Stuart to share more about the work he is doing today and he was gracious enough to give us the back story on some of his most recent work.

“My wife and I have been spending time in San Diego during the winter season to be near my “daughter in law”. Here she is in the cold California surf at sunset with her yoga instructor. I had to lay down in the cold sand to get this low angle and reflections in the sunset. In spite of all of us shivering it was nothing but smiles as we finished the very productive photo session. The photo shoot was especially enjoyable for me as Andrea and Christina kept an amazing choreography of fluid yoga exercised going. I only changed the location and background. When artists love what they do, it really shows in the photos.”

“Two sisters here are getting ready for their mother’s wedding. I was crammed in a small bathroom trying to find unusual angles to photograph the bride preparing for her big day when I caught this quick and meaningful image of her daughters. I love the family interaction at weddings. It is fun to just let the action happen and be aware of the wonderful candid moments that present themselves.”

“I have spent a good part of my adult life observing whales in the wild. Moments like this represent a split second literally and figuratively. Spending weeks on a small boat in the rough winter months off the Big Island of Hawaii is nothing to complain about but can be arduous all the same. One of my favorite islands in the world, The Big Island has a diverse range of mountains, forests, deserts and more microclimates than just about any place on the planet. Everything came together on this unusual adult whale breach off the Koala Coast. The palm trees in the background and shoreline wave break spray create a wonderful and moody negative space.”

“For ten years I have been experimenting with taking motion pan blur images underwater. Because it is a very fluid world I was tired of seeing it frozen with flash and high shutter speeds. The purple anthias fish in this image were taken on Moore Island in French Polynesia. I used a very slow shutter speed and panned my camera with the fish. The background takes on the look of a painting and you get a better feeling of the fish swimming. These schooling anthias fish range in colors from brilliant orange to this vibrant purple.”
