Alan Majchrowicz: Mastering Simplicity

Alan Majchrowicz is well known for his work producing distinctive landscapes and images of the natural world. In reviewing his portfolio our editors were also taken with Alan’s beautiful still life photography and asked Alan about his approach:

“I’ve always been drawn to black and white photography and simple patterns in nature. Many times in the past I’ve tried to replicate some of the styles and feeling present in the old photographic masters like Weston and Cunningham. I’ve also learned to appreciate isolating forms and patterns from studying Georgia O’Keeffe’s work.”

“Many times these days I end up going back through my existing files looking for something I may have initially missed, or perhaps an image that had potential but it hadn’t shown itself to me until months or years later.  Many images in this group have only come to light recently when I went back and tried some different processing techniques, and I’m very excited to continue exploring new ways of bringing out the true personality of a subject.”

Mardis Coers: Creativity + Spontaneity

Based in Carmichael, CA photographer Mardis Coers is an accomplished professional who recently submitted a series new images created on his iPhone and provides the back story for some of this terrific work:

“I was taking a series of photos of almond trees in bloom in the Capay Valley area of Northern California and discovered a remote dirt country road that was off the beaten path.  After driving on the dirt road a mile or so, I was impressed with an area that appeared to me to have a very pastoral and painterly-like quality about it. I then asked my wife and favorite model, Lora, to take a short stroll down the country lane.  As she was walking down the road away from me, I snapped the image with my iPhone.”

“My wife and I had gone into San Francisco to spend a day taking photos at different locations and while walking down Market Street, we had to stop at one of the street intersections.  While waiting at the intersection, I noticed an interesting looking gnarly tree with mostly leafless branches.  I was motivated to take a quick photo of the scene because of the contrast between the tree and the two office buildings.”

“My computer had needed an upgrade of its internal hard disk drive and while waiting for the delivery of my computer at a local computer repair shop, I asked the manager of the store if I could take some photos of various computer components.  After explaining that I shot stock photos and allaying any concerns that he might have had, he was very helpful and brought out several different computer items for me to shoot.  This particular image of the computer circuit board reminds me somewhat of an aerial view of an illuminated city at nighttime.”
